Although mosaic has a long history, dating back to ancient Greeks and Romans, it has become increasingly popular as a hobby over the last few years.  It is fun to do and easy to learn.

People young and old, male and female are enjoying this relaxing hobby.

What is Mosaic?

Basically, mosaic is the art of sticking glass tiles onto a surface of choice. This could be wood, glass, ceramic or concrete.  (Lydia who works in the shop often tells Mosaic addicted customers that once the bug bites, they will want to mosaic their husbands!)

However it doesn’t begin and end here.  As a hobby, we keep it simple by utilising a variety of tiles and inserts.  We stock a large variety of tiles in a multitude of sizes and colour.  Glass tiles are the most popular and easiest to use but we also stock unglazed ceramic tiles, river glass tiles, glitter tiles, foil tiles and metal tiles.  Inserts are used to add character and interest to a project.  Incorporating a ceramic flower onto a mosaic frame can finish the project off.

We supply a variety of products for mosaic.  The most important of course is a decent pair of mosaic cutters.  The flat edged nippers are not as popular as the wheel cutters.  We stock ceramic vases and bowls and wooden blanks such as trays, pen holders, tissue boxes, jewellery boxes etc.  We also stock a huge variety of flat wooden blanks, specifically for painting, decoupage and mosaic – such as crosses, butterflies, dragonflies, hearts, frames, aeroplanes, words, key holders … the list is endless!

How do I … Mosaic?

Basically, the item to mosaic is chosen.  If the item is ceramic or wood, the tiles are cut (with proper cutters) and glued on with wood or craft glue.  Once the item has been covered with tiles, and the glue is dry, the item is grouted.   If the project is done on concrete, or is to be used outdoors, then rather than being glued on, proper tile adhesive is used to stick the tiles.  Once the project is tiled, a bonding liquid is mixed in with the grout, as a waterproofing medium.

Our mosaic class

Our mosaic class is our most popular and longest class.  Usually about 4 hours long.  We have a variety of choices of items to mosaic.  Our classes range from beginner, to the more experienced.  We help students to choose their item and tiles. Then teach different types of cutting of the tiles, and how to create the most effective design.  The class is fully inclusive, but excludes “fancy” tiles and ceramic inserts.  Often groups of friends do a mosaic class, and then have a get-together once a month at the shop, to complete their own projects in their own time.

We stock - crystal tiles, magic mosaic, shattered glass, coloured mirror, ceramic, stone tiles and much more in store
