All the rage at the moment!
Mixed media mosaic combines a number of different techniques, which involves making tiles from scratch, using polymer clay (We stock sculpey clay).
The tiles are moulded, embossed, stamped or cut from rolled clay, painted and baked. A specific theme and colour can be followed. Along with the polymer tiles, normal glass tiles, beads, pewter and pebbles can be used, to make an interesting, personal item. The best thing – this item is not grouted at all. The tiles are places flush against each other.
This is a lovely project, especially for those that like a challenge, and are willing to take their time.
Once the idea is mastered, there is no end as to what can be added in. A beautiful effect is to combine glass mosaic and clay tiles. Just remember to grout your glass mosaic section before adding your clay tiles.
How do I ….?
Tiles are moulded and cut in different shapes and patterns using different colour clay and paint. The design is placed on a tile – yes an old ceramic floor tiles is perfect. The design needs to be placed on the tile in the exact same place as where it will be placed on the frame or wooden blank. Tiles are custom made to suit the size. The entire tile with the hand made polymer tiles (minus the beads and other accessories) is baked in the oven. Don’t over handle the clay tiles once you have cut them out
Once baked, the tiles are transferred to the wooden blank and stuck down with craft glue. Then the beads, charms and other bits and pieces can be added. Remember to paint your wooden blank before adding clay tiles.
Class cost R 350-00. Bring your own special beads, charms etc to fill in.
